Covering All Basses Book

"I highly recommend this book as a goldmine in instructional materials, I have examined each
page with a discerning eye. I can easily say that in my fifty-five years of study and teaching
bass, this book rates amongst the best that I have seen. I plan to add it to my pedagogical
library and will use it very soon on all levels of school curriculum."

Richard Davis (World renown bassist, Downbeat poll winner, Professor of string bass at the University of Wisconsin)

"Good book, and the transcripts alone are worth the price of admission."

Eddie Gomez (Bassist with The Bill Evans Trio, New York freelance bassist)

"This book can be a benefit to all bass players regardless of your style or your level.
Very well done Steve."

Victor Wooten (Bassist with Bela felk and the flecktones, Solo artist, Bass player magazine poll winner)

"Basses and basics is what Steve Palmore has presented in his publication 'Covering all Basses'. I'm sure with the right supervision, young musicians will benefit from his book."

Joe Guastefeste (Principal bassist Chicago Symphony Orchestra)

"This is a great book, especially if you're looking to be a complete player, playing many different styles. It also will help if you plan on playing both electric and acoustic bass. It connects the two instruments very nicely. Happy practicing!"

Marcus Miller (World class studio bassist.  Bassist for Miles Davis, Producer)

"I have read this comprehensive book and I feel that there is a need for this kind of material because of the multifacted nature of today's music world. There is a need for the contemporary bass player to know more than one instrument."

Dr. Sam Gill (The Colorado Symphony Orchestra)

Final Destination CD
Chicago Defender 2004
Steve Palmore’s Final Destination CD is an accomplishment that makes our city proud Chicago is a city that has produced a long line of jazz greats throughout our city’s history, and to see this heritage continue to be carried on by our future generations makes us all proud. The title track Final Destination shows what can be done with instrument in the hands of a spectacular player, it’s the first time that I’ve ever heard the instrument played this way, and it’s truly representative of innovation. The band is great, the composition features a slick horn line, a grooving rhythm section and some fantastic solos by all of the players. Steve's over-all musicality continues with a great rendition of a medley of How High the Moon and Charlie Parker’s Ornithology, He shows that though the music evolves, the traditional roots will always be respected, and he continues to show that with his original composition Thinking of You. Overjoyed shows us just why this guy is good, not many players take on the challenge of even trying to play and instrument like the six string bass, but he does it and does it well! M Tune features a nice jaunty melody played on a unique instrument. Frankly, I’ve never even heard of an eight string bass, much less seen one, but, if he keeps this up, we’re going to have call him the Rashaan Roland Kirk of the bass. One for Ray could only make Ray Brown smile. His song Dis & Dat is a Victor Wooten style groove tune, again featuring a dynamic group of musicians. Keep an eye out for this guy. You don’t want to miss him!

Jazz Interpreter 2005
Steve Palmores's music and story is like one from a storybook. His career has crossed boundaries over which few have dared to tread, and this CD is living proof of his journey which should produce even more interesting results in the future. After apprenticing with the likes of Von Freeman, Sonny Stitt, Muhal Richard Abrhams, The Civic Symphony Orchestra, Stevie Wonder, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, one wonders how come we haven’t heard more about this guy? Equally intriguing is how he got to New York.  He did a two week tour of Europe with avant-garde saxophonist Fred Anderson’s group and while the other members of the group switched planes to continue back to Chicago, he just grabbed his bass and suitcase and said “later fells, I’ve found a new home. This is were I’m staying”. A day later he was playing in a street band with fellow Chicago’s Steve Coleman and Jean Paul Bourelly in the roots of what later became known as MBase. Final Destination is the first stop in what should be a great series of performances to come. This CD wraps it all up and packages it in a way that captures the aesthetic as well as the layman’s ear.

Steve Palmore Trio CD
The Jazz Reviewer 2005
How does one put funk, jazz, classical, avant-garde and innovation into a pot and cook it? Well, here it is, and this is darn good soup! With an impressive list of credentials under his belt, Steve Palmore is ready to take his place in the Jazz spotlight. As a bassist/composer/bandleader, he has put together a musical feast complete with dessert. Steve says that one of his goals is to create music that is both aesthetic and can be appealing to a wide audience, many people have done one or the other, but few have done both. I think he’s on the right track!

Jazz Today Sept. 2005
Steve Palmore is a true blender of music, and this CD does just that. Quite often the bass doesn’t get many opportunities to shine, but in the capable hands of a musician like this, it would be a crime not to. The tracks though mostly along the funk style groove aren’t just funk tunes. They bring together a quite respectable level of masterful and competent musicians as demonstrated in the horn lines and all of the solos. This seems to be the type of performance that could only come as a result of significant experience in several styles of music and creative imagination. The tracks feel good, sound good, and make you feel good. The windy city of Chicago has blown a musical storm across the country here to New York.

Jazz News
Final Destination shows that Steve Palmore has something to say. Having established a solid musical background by working with the likes of The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Von Freeman, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Sonny Stitt, a mirage of funk and R&B bands and a symphonic background definitely qualifies someone to be able to speak their piece. The bass and the band definitely tell their stores here. The cuts transcend what some people might call barriers, and does so quite well. Steve shows some good musical proficiency with the bow on both Final Destination and his treatment of How High the Moon, but don’t count out the rest of the band, because James Zollar, Patience Higgins, and James Wiedman all express themselves very well also. With the amount of variety contained in this CD, one has some tasty musical stew. Thinking of You and One for Ray represent excellent traditional jazz trio playing while Overjoyed, M Tune, Searching and Dis & Dat are all along the funk line. Overall, there sees to be a little something for everyone.

Jazz Now
Steve Palmore seems to have done it all at some point, but it’s all been in the background. It’s time for him to step forward. With and impressive roster of performance credits behind him, he certainly has done his apprenticeship. He’s been behind Sonny Stitt, Muhal Richard Abrahams, Von Freeman, Chico Freeman, Steve Colman, Stevie Wonder, just to name a few. More importantly however is what he is beginning to produce on his own. Final Destination is one of the better CDs that I’ve heard this year, and let’s hope that are more to come. Steve has an impressive line up of players with him, that definitely carry their own. James Zollar the trumpeter, Patience Higgens on the saxes, James Wiedman piano and synthesizers, drummers Winard Harper and Brian Grice and Irving Waters on guitar all contribute to the success of the CD.
